This Wednesday we had a very successful meeting.
The YA Librarian from Bull Run Regional Library, Ms. North-Jack, came to speak to Book Club.
She shared many great resources and clubs available at the public library. Bull Run Library is looking for weekly volunteers to tutor elementary students with the GIVE program or serve on the Teen Advisory Group. The library also has an amazing new service called HOOPLA, that is described as Netflix for libraries! Anyone with a public library card can access this site/app and check out digital movies, music, eBooks, audiobooks, and comics with no late fees or holds!

We also talked about Banned Books Week, which is September 25th-October 1st. This was a great opportunity to discuss why people try to ban or challenge books and what negative impacts censorship can have. We saw some examples of previously banned titles that are part of the Raider Library collection, including: Twilight, Harry Potter, Persepolis, Go Ask Alice, My Sister's Keeper, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Looking for Alaska, and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. Read more about Banned Books Week here. |
Congratulations to Karla, our lucky finder of the hidden banned book in the library. Karla took home a $10 gift certificate to McKay's Used Books. Congratulations also to Layan, our first Book Club member to make a BINGO on her Book Club Bingo sheet. Layan took home a new journal as her Bingo prize.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, October 12th. We are hoping to have a visit from author Zachary Tamer who will be sharing his newest book of poetry with us. Learn more about Zach on his website. Students, keep an eye out for an e-mail from Ms. Neal when the Before I Fall books come in.
